“The Here And Now is who we are.” - “The Here And Now wasn’t really Architects.”
“We’ve never been so happy with an album.” - “We didn’t really like THAN.”
“Being positive is one of the most important things in life.” - “It’s awesome to be angry again.”
“We don’t really listen to heavy music anymore.” - “We got our energy back on Daybreaker.”
We understand a lot of this may be confusing but a lot of factors play in to it.
First off, don’t doubt that Daybreaker and THAN are both exactly what we wanted to write and record and neither catered to anyone but ourselves. THAN was who we were. Saying it wasn’t Architects is daft BUT in retrospect it didn’t feel as natural to us as HC and Daybreaker do, but that was something we had to learn whilst on tour. Of course every bands perception of their own identity evolves with time and this is just the course that we’ve been led on.
In terms of saying we were happy with THAN; some of us were delighted, whilst others were very disappointed. Obviously we didn’t want to project negativity about the record to the public so those individuals kept their opinions to themselves for the sake of our bands career. Its not very wise to play down your own material! Although we’ve never been a band to blow our own trumpet…..
If we’re talking about positivity vs anger, we don’t think they’re mutually exclusive. A lot of what THAN was about remains true HOWEVER we’ve become more aware and more concerned with all the terrible things that are happening around us and so its impossible not to express a degree of anger about it. That said, we are still positive about what can be done to help promote a positive change in the world and so in that sense the message remains. I think its fair to say that some of what THAN was about came from a group of people who were fairly oblivious and naive at the time.
Lastly in terms of what we listen to - we STILL don’t listen to much heavy music, but does that mean we can’t enjoy playing it? A massive factor in why we wrote a heavier record was, as I alluded to before, we found ourselves enjoying playing the heavier songs live and we felt more comfortable playing songs of HC than certain songs off of THAN. The reason the sound of THAN lent in such a melodic direction was because of the music we listen to but in a way it got caught in a middle ground. We can’t be Coldplay (as much as we’d like to be) and as such, the album got caught in a musical purgatory between being a super heavy band and an indie band! To some people that wasn’t very appealing and to some people it was - however we don’t believe that this identity crisis bought out the best in us as a band. We had a much clearer vision of what we wanted to be on Daybreaker. We are not saying people shouldn’t like THAN, far from it! We still love a bunch of those songs and will ALWAYS play them live. There are many things about that record that we are still all genuinely proud of. It was just an odd time in our career, but its nothing that we regret because we learnt a lot of lessons that have made us a better band and, as a result, allowed us to create Daybreaker - an album that I can honestly say, hand on heart, that we are all extremely proud of.
Sorry to single you out, but we’ve seen a few people saying this and thought it’d be worth explaining our thinking behind it all.
We hope that clears things up a little :D
Much Love,
Dan

My little brother got into outer space and stuff so my step-mom bought him a place mat with all the planets on it. When I first saw it, I was upset, because it was newer and so Pluto wasn’t labeled. I was about to say something when I noticed something…
Pluto is there.
The artist remembered Pluto.
Guys…
The artist drew Pluto crying.
